Cheltenham Women seal first league title

6th August 2022

Cheltenham Women firmly announced their presence this week by completing an emphatic season which sees them crowned CDCA Women’s League champions for the first time.

Overcoming previous winners Charlton Kings and Dumbleton, Cheltenham finished 27 points clear of second placed newcomers Royal Wootton Bassett.

I’m just their fifth season since being founded, Cheltenham Women managed to string together wins and come out on top in two crucial tight games leaving the path to the top clear.

‘This absolutely reflects where the women’s team at Cheltenham is at the moment’ said women’s captain Jen Cooper. ‘We have worked incredibly hard over the last few years to establish a strong squad with depth in all areas. Every single person in the squad should be immensely proud as everyone has contributed something and given 100%’.

Standout performances this year have come from u15 Worcestershire all rounder Emma Bowyer and u18 Gloucestershire county all rounder Liv Brock. Emma finishes as leading run scorer for the league with Liv in second. Liv also jointly tops the bowling standings.

‘Women’s cricket at Cheltenham is thriving’ added Jen Cooper. ‘This year we have been supported by a number of u15 players making their senior debut. They have fitted in seamlessly and credit should be given to Rich, Mark and James for their hard work in developing the junior section as well as Simon for devoting so much time and effort in advocating for the women’s game. With the numbers and talent we have the future looks bright for Cheltenham for a long time to come’.

Cheltenham Women now turn to defence of their softball league cup with five fixtures remaining. A double may well be on the cards!!
