Second place again.

Cheltenham hosted Langford for the return fixture in the CDCA league on a cloudy but dry Wednesday evening looking to reverse the result from a few weeks ago.
On winning the toss, captain Olivia opted to bat first and get some runs on the board. Grace was bowled for a first ball duck as the Cheltenham innings got off to a bad start, made worse in the following over as Liv was caught for 3. Beth threatened to continue her rich form with the bat with 3 fours before being caught and bowled for 15 in the 4th over. Eloise was bowled for 2 in the sixth over and we were up against it. Hannah put on a patient 14 with Pippa as we attempted to rebuild and then Pippa was run out for 4 to leave us on 39 for 5 in the 11th over. Hannah and Sophie dug in and put together a well worked 35 for the 6th wicket - which was Sophie, bowled for 4 in the 18th over. Helen and Hannah put on a further 11 together as Hannah really started to play her shots. Helen was run out for 1 in the final over desperately trying to get Hannah back on strike and Leia came in for the final ball which was negotiated safely. Cheltenham finished on 85 from their 20 overs. Hannah had rescued our innings with a great knock of 37 not out to give us something to bowl at.
For the second time this season against Langford, the Cheltenham bowling was below par. Despite regular bowling changes we failed to make breakthroughs often enough, although some did come, and our bowling was generally not consistent enough. Eloise struck in the 4th over to bowl one opener for 9, and a few overs later Grace got the other opener caught behind by Hannah, also for 9. The no3 was run out by Liv for 15 in the 10th over but Langford had already got 56 on the board and were well on target. We briefly had some hope as a couple of wickets fell in quick succession as Liv bowled the no4 for 19 and then Helen took a good catch from Hannah’s bowling to dismiss the no5 for 2. Too little, too late though as the Langford batters were able to knock off the few remaining runs without further incident to overhaul our total with 2 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand. Extras was joint top score, with no balls having a good time of it on 12.
So Cheltenham come up short again against Langford. Even though we scored more boundaries we lost momentum with too many early wickets when we batted and despite a good recovery from Hannah we were a good 20 runs short of where we should have been. Our bowling just wasn’t quite on song as we failed to stem the flow of runs/extras despite none of the Langford batters really getting away.
Still: a good spirited show form Cheltenham, and at least it wasn't raining. Onwards and upwards we go.
